June 18 フランスの柴犬 (NO.1 SHIBA IN FRANCE)フランスの友人から以前輸出した我家の柴犬がフランスで１番の柴犬になったと連絡がありました。 全犬種でも５番目だそうです。 この嬉しい知らせでまた作出の意欲が湧いてきそうです。
Eric from France informs me that Kazakoshi no Teruharu is now No. 1 Shiba in France. Teruharu is also No.5 with all breeds. Teruharu is a half brother of my Sakura-ou. Good news like this encourages me to keep breeding. I wish Eric and Teruharu further success.
May 13 ブルーベリーの花 (BLUEBERRY FLOWERS)我家のブルーベリーがやっと満開に開花しました。 あぶくま高原ではまだまだ遅霜の心配もありますが、夏にはこの可憐な花が青い見事な実になるのを期待して毎日世話をしていきたいと思います。 ７・８月がブルーベリー狩りのシーズンになりますので、柴犬の見学も兼ねてぜひ遊びに来ていただきたいと思います。
Blueberry flowers are now in full bloom at the Blueberry Garden Atsumi. The flowers are small but I love the white simple flowers. I am crossing my fingers that these small flowers will be ripen to a tasty blue fruit in the summer. If anyone has a plan to visit Japan in the summer, you are very welcome to come and pick delicious blueberries at my farm.
  April 24 夏井川の千本桜 (A THOUSAND CHERRY TREES)小野町の名所「夏井川の千本桜」は毎年私達夫婦の桜の見納めになっています。 今年は満開になるのが例年より早くて２０日前後でした。 この写真は盛りを過ぎて曇り空の肌寒い日でしたが、充分今年最後の桜を楽しめました。
A thousand cherry trees along the Natsui River in Ono blooms very late. For Shizuno and I, it is the last blossom of cherry flowers we enjoy every year. In spite of cloudy and windy day, the flowers were beautiful as usual. The Japanese people has a special attachment to the cherry blossom. It is because, in a windy day like today, the petals of the flower blow away as if it is snowing and the beauty of the flower never lasts very long.
April 15 花見山 (SHANGRI-LA IN FUKUSHIMA)小野の桜はやっと蕾が膨らみ始めましたが、福島市の花見山ではすでに彼岸桜や東海桜は終わりに近づき緋桃や寒紅桜が満開でした。 ふくしまの桃源郷と呼ぶにふさわしく花見山公園全体が色様々な花に覆われていました。 早朝の清々しい空気と甘いほのかな香りに包まれ、妻とまた来年同じ頃に来れることを願いながらゆっくり２時間ばかり散策しました。
Hanamiyama Park is called the Shangrii-La in Fukushima. Shizuno and I went for an early morning walk in the park. Sweet fragrance covered the whole mountain. The photos can not fully convey the sweet smell and the fresh air but I hope you can feel a part of the beauty we experienced at the Hanamiyama today.
  April 11 若帰る (WAKA RETURNS)友人の所に武者修行に出していた若が帰ってきました。 東北連合展で３位に入るなど思いどうりの活躍をしてくれました。 これからは我家の種雄として活躍してくれる事を期待しています。 欠点もありますが交配を考えてよい仔犬を出して行きたいと思います。 豊錦系の今まで我家には居なかった系統なので楽しみにしています。
Waka was sent to Mr. Hoshi's kennel to be shown in the shows. After a great carrier wining third place at Touhoku Reginal Show among the others, I am now ready to use him as my stud. He is a Toyonishiki line boy and new bloodline to my kennel. I hope he will do well for me as a stud.
  April 06 桜満開 (CHERRY BLOSSOM)久しぶりに横浜に帰り孫達と花見をしてきました。 ICUは次女の母校で桜のトンネルがきれいなのに花見客が少なく週末の花見をゆっくり楽しみました。 福島の桜はまだまだこれからなので今年は二回花見を楽しめそうです。 還暦を迎えてあと何回花見が出来るかと指折り数えているので何か得をした気分です。
Cherry blossom is the symbol of spring in Japan. In fact, cherry is the national flower and Japan itself. The word "Sakura, cherry" is often used in shiba names too. My current stud is, Kazakoshi no Sakura-ou, meaning King of Cherry Blossom.
I spent a wonderful time with grand daughters over the weekend at a college campus known for a beautiful cherry blossom tunnel.
   March 25 昔の柴犬と最近の柴犬 (OLD SHIBAS AND NEW SHIBAS)約８０年の歴史で柴犬は体形的にも変化して来た様に見受けられる。 最近の柴犬は見た目がとてもきれいで欠点が少なくなっている。 しかし私には｢味」が薄くなったように思えてならない。 作出計画の中でキレイな犬を作るのはそれほど難しくない。 ｢味」のある犬となると話は別である。 この８０年間日本犬愛好家は犬の本質を深く考える事無く, 見た目だけの犬を作り続けてきたのではないだろうか？ 単なる懐古趣味ではなく、日本犬の本質をこれ以上失いたくないと思うのは私だけであろうか？
During 80 years of its history, shiba inu has changed a lot. As you can see in the pictures below phenotypically there are substential differences between the two. Yes, the recent shibas are prettier. Yes, there are less faults. Yet, I feel that the recent shibas lacks the intrinsic characters that separate Japanese dogs from the other breeds. I am not saying that the pictures below are good examples. I just want to show that shibas can be changed very much over a short period of time. I feel that if shibas are bred just to win at the shows, the shiba inu will end up to be a cute, pretty small breed from Japan.
March 03 ひな祭り (GIRLS DAY)昨日紹介した「Fluffy」の姉妹犬がイタリアの品評会で優秀な成績を残したとのひな祭りにふさわしい連絡が入りました。 この犬も負けずとも劣らない優秀な犬に育っている様で今後が楽しみです。 作出者の方は写真の通りイタリア美人で博士号を持つインテリです。 このような方がこれからのイタリアの柴犬界のリーダーになっていただければとても頼もしい限りです。
On March 3rd we celebrate Hinamatsuri (the Girl's Day) in Japan. We wish for good health and happiness of our daughters and grand daughters with traditional dolls and special foods. I prayed for health and happiness of my twin grand daughters in Yokohama. It is very timely that Elettra sent me the pictures of Tama, the litter mate sister of Fluffy, today. Tama is already doing very well in the shows in Italy at this young age and I look forward to her future success in the European show rings. Wishing Tama good health and happiness!! I also look forward to a sound leadership of person like Elettra in the Italian Shiba World.
  March 02 国際協力 (INTERNATIONAL COLABORATION)写真は「Fluffy」と言ってイタリア、スエーデン、米国と日本の協力で作出された柴犬です。 父犬はスエーデンに送られた紅若号で母犬はアメリカ経由イタリアに行った奈保号です。 アドバイスを求められて私が提案した交配で産まれたイタリア初の日保登録犬です。 なかなか元気なよい犬に育っています。 世界各国の柴犬愛好家の間で大いに協力し合って良い犬がどんどん作出される事を願っています。
This is "Fluffy", the first Italian born puppy registered with Nippo. He is a result of the international co-orporation between, Italy, Sweden, US and Japan. I sent the sire Beniwaka to Sweden sometime ago and the dam Naho is now in Italy via the US. Elettra asked me to recomand a stud for Naho and I suggested Beniwaka. I am very happy to see a wonderful result from a colaboration among the shiba fanciers from several countries. Shiba genes are limited in many countries and I hope such international colaboration will increase to better the breed in such countries. Thank you Birgit for the wonderful pictures. Congratulations, Elettra for producing a very nice shiba.
   February 23 フィンランドの柴犬 (SHIBAS IN FINLAND)フィンランドの柴犬愛好家から可愛らしい写真が届きました。 海外では犬の躾が行き届いている様で安心して赤ちゃんと一緒に遊ばせているようです。 日本犬は気性が激しいと思われていますが、躾次第で家族の良き一員になれます。 これは日本犬の本質である｢良性」なのでしょうか？ 社会環境が変われば日本犬の気質も変わらざるを得ないのでしょう。
A fancier from Finland sent me this very cute pictures of shibas with children. Shibas or Japanese breeds are sometimes believed to have aggressive traits but with proper socialization one can even trust shibas with babies. I suppose this is a part of "Ryousei" that I have talked about. It seems shibas are good at adapting to a changing enviroment.
  February 14 黒舞号 (KUROMAI GO)次世代を担う台雌を作出することは犬舎にとって一番の課題になります。 故土井氏から譲り受けた「華の舞号」からとても良い仔犬が出来たので多いに期待しています。 まだまだこれからですがとても楽しみにしています。 あまり大きな期待をもつと裏切られる事があるので黒舞の成長を楽しみにしながらゆっくり見守っていきたいと思います。
Producing a bitch to carry on the breeding program is the most important issue for any kennel. Kazakoshi no Kuromai out of Hana no Mai a wondewrful bitch I got from late Mr. Doi is currently such a hopeful for my kennel. The puppy is still very young and I have been in shibas long enough to know that a pup changes a lot before maturity. I have been disappointed many times for having too high an expectation so I am cautious but... I am crossing my fingers. LOL
  February 06 雪の朝 (SNOW IN ONO)一週間ほど前にこの冬一番の雪が降りました。 寒い朝が続き残念ながら生まれたばかりのミディの仔犬を死なせてしまいました。 ミディは初めての子育てでは無いので油断してしまいました。 寒い冬の出産はやはり避けたほうが良かったみたいです。 このところ２・３日暖かい日が続いていますが、田んぼには白い残雪があり春はまだ先の様です。 仔犬を死なせてしまい少し落ち込んでいるところです。
We had a very cold weather during past one week here in Ono. There was a heavy snow and the temperatures are constantly below zero. I am very sad to say that I found Midi's litter dead one morning. This was not the first litter with Midi and I was a bit careless. I 've been regretting my own carelessness and feeling down these few days. The rice paddies in front of our house are still covered with snow and the spring seems very far away.
 January 29 仔犬の成長 (PUPPIES GROW FAST)仔犬の成長は早いもので正月早々生まれた錦姫の仔がこんなに大きくなりました。 このぐらいの大きさになるとその将来性が少し見えてきますがまだまだ良し悪しを確定するには早すぎます。 良い犬はなかなか手放さないものですが、ブリーダー自身が決めかねているこの時期にリスクを取って買い取れば時には大変な宝物を掘り当てることになるかも知れません。 お金持ちの方は大枚を積んでチャンピオンを買えるでしょうが、我々にとって仔犬を見る目を育てて宝探しするのも一つの楽しみです。
Nishikihime litter born earlier this month have grown to be a nice looking puppies. They are giving me a lot of joy. It is still too early to make any reasonable assessment of the puppies but we can check a little more than just the coat color now. The eyes are opened and general facial expression can be imagined. Breeders usually do not part with his champions unless you can slap his cheeks with a bundle of cash! LOL I think it is a good gamble to take a risk and buy puppies at an early age when even the breeders can not be 100% sure of the future development. I try to cultivate critical eyes for making reasonable assessment of how the puppies may develop at full maturity. This is a part of fun in the hobby of breeding shibas.
 January 27 仔犬９匹！(NINE SHIBA PUPPIES)ノルウェーのラング氏より送られてきた珍しい写真です。 日本では柴犬の平均的な出産は２・３頭ですが、どうも海外の柴犬は仔犬をたくさん産む傾向があるようです。 以前スウェーデンの方から８頭産まれたとの報告がありましたが、今回は９頭です。 柴犬の出産世界記録は１１頭だそうです。 飼い方の違いが有るのでしょうか？ 素晴らしい環境でのびのびと暮らしていると仔犬も沢山産まれるのでしょうか？ 因みに我家で数日前産まれたのは４頭でした。 ノルウェーの環境にはかないません。 (笑）
Mr. Lang from Norway sent me this nice picture of 9 puppies. It looks like a Scandinavian record for shiba puppies. Mr. Lang said that the world record is 11 puppies. It seems to me the shibas abroad have more puppies in a litter than in Japan. Our average litter size is about 2 or 3 puppies. I wonder what makes the difference? I am sure food, environment etc. all contributes to more puppies abroad. One thing is sure, the wonderful environment in Norway like the picture below must have something to do.
 .jpg) January 14 仔犬の成長 (NEW YEAR PUPPIES)新年早々生まれた仔犬はまだ眼も開いていないのですが、この時期の仔犬の評価は難しくいつも頭を悩ませています。 人によっては生まれた瞬間に仔犬の良し悪しを見極められると言いますが、私はあまり軽率に評価するのは如何な物かと思っています。 柴犬はゆっくり成長する犬種で成犬になるまで２・３年の時間がかかります。 若犬時に良い犬も成犬になってみないと本当の評価が出来ないものです。 忍耐強くじっくり育てる事が出来るか否かが大きな分かれ目になるようです。
Nishikihime pups are developing well. They have not yet opened eyes but should be opening in a few days. At this stage of puppy development it is not easy to tell how the pup will be in full maturity. Some breeders will tell you how the pup will develop at the time of the birth but as far as I am concerned, all I can tell at this early age is how the coat color may be, how healthy the pup is and perhaps a possible head shape. Shibas develop slowly and change so much over two or three years until full maturity. I recommend shiba fanciers to be patient with his or her pups and enjoy the slow development. I do my final assessment only after the full maturity. I think patience pays off.
January 05 新しい年、新しい命(NEW YEAR, NEW BORN LIFE)明けましておめでとうございます。
年が明けて３日に錦姫が仔犬を産みました。 新しい年のスタートにふさわしい出来事でした。
この仔達が幸せに育つ様に祈るばかりです。

Nishikihime had her litter on the third, one red boy, a black and tan boy and a black and tan girl. It was an event fitting for starting the year 2009.

December 31 年末 (END OF THE YEAR)柴犬の情報を発信したいとブログを始めましたが、私の個人的な興味の情報に偏ってしまったかもしれません。 柴犬を飼い始める人、初心者の人に対する配慮がかけていたかも知れません。
海外の愛好家からの反響がかなりありました。 世界各国で日本犬がポピュラーになってきた昨今、日本犬の正しい理解も必要になります。 これからもその一端を補えればと思います。 今年も最後になりました。 良いお年をお迎えください。
I started the blog to send out information on Japanese breeds in English. However, it may not have been what a novice or people who wants to start out with shiba inu needed. December 15 伝統の継承 (SUCCESSION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE)海外の多くの柴犬愛好家とお付き合いさせていただいて、ヨーロッパのブリダーの方がアメリカのブリダーより血統の伝統を守る傾向があると感じています。 多くのヨーロッパのブリダーはホームページの中で日保のスタンダードを知る事の重要性を認めています。 私は「伝統とは形を敬称することでは無くその精神・魂を継承することである。」と考えています。 柴犬の「形」が時とともに少しづつ変わって行ったとしてもその本質すなわち、カン威・良性・素朴は普遍であって欲しいと思います。
I wrote that European breeders are more inclined to breed to the traditional type. This impression is from my discussions with many European and American shiba breeders. Meri Pistokoski from Finland in her website says "Since the breed standards are always a bit loose, they can be interpreted many ways. ・・・ However, it might be beneficial to read the Japanese Nippo standards beside the FCI standards, to get a better view and perspective." Meri goes on to say, "As we are talking about Shibas, we need to remember where the dog is from and what its original task was. As a breed, that is primitive and native to Japan; its heritage deserves to be recognized." I feel the succession of cultural heritage is not of form and shape but of inner spirit and soul. With Shibas, even if its phenotype slightly changes with time, the essence of Japanese dogs should be preserved. Such essence is Kan-I, Ryousei and Soboku.
December 12 犬種の本質 (THE ESSENCE OF BREED)日保発行の｢日本犬」に松本氏がタイトルと同じ題名で記事を書いておりますが、その中で「日本犬が一つの品種として認められた時期はその犬たちは明らかに獣猟犬であった。」と述べています。 また、犬百科事典から、「・・・犬が置かれた社会環境は絶えず変化していくので、かれらは当初果たしていた役割とは別の役割を担わされることになる。 ・・・繁殖者は・・・その時々に応じて、理想的標準を僅かながら修正しなけｔれはならぬ必要に迫られる。・・・それは品種の本来の資質を変える事なくほんの一部を時代に即応して修正するに過ぎない。」と引用している。 同氏は結論として、「種は変わって当然。 しかしなるべくならば、変わって欲しくない。」と述べている。 柴犬の保存とは何か？を考える上で、なるべくならば社会環境が変化する中、柴犬の本質だけはできる限り保存されるべきであろうと思う。
In the recent Nippo bulletin, Mr. Matsumoto writes that Japanese dogs were clearly hunting dogs at the time of the establishment of the Japanese breeds some 80 years ago. He refers to "The Encyclopedia of Dogs" and metions that social environment changes over a period of time and breeders have to make some minor adjustments of breed standard adapting to such changes. This is can be done without changing the essence of a breed. There are differences in the phenotypes of some hunting breeds between "field dogs" and "show dogs". In the US, there seem to be a tendency for breeders to breed just to win at a show, while in Europe, breeders are more inclined to breed to the traditional type of dog. If shibas were bred by breeders around the world with such different thinking, over a time, we will have shibas with different phenotypes like German Shephered. Mr. Matsumoto concludes that it is inevitable for a breed to change but if possible "I do not want to see the Japanese breeds to change into something different from the dogs the Nippo pioneers seeked to establish." I totally agree with Mr. Matsumoto. I wish that at least "the essence of shiba inu" should be preserved in the changing world.
December 10 日本犬保存会とジャパンケネルクラブ (JKC AND NIPPO)近年のペットブームで犬の頭数が爆発的に増えている中、今年の日本犬保存会全国展覧会での出陳頭数が少なかった事に少なからず問題意識を持っている愛好家が多いようです。 ジャパンケネルクラブの会員数が増えているかどうか知りませんが、日保の会員数は明らかに減少しています。 日保の展覧会とジャパンケネルクラブの品評会はおのずからその目的が違うにも関わらず、同じような美人コンテスト紛いのショーに終始している現状に問題は無いのか？ 日保の原点に帰り日本犬の保存とは何か、何をどう保存するのか、そもそもその必要性が有るのか？ 柴犬を趣味にして長い年月が経ちましたが、このような問題について考えて行きたいと思っています。
I mentioned earlier that there is a foundamental difference in the purpose of Japan Kennel Club (JKC) and Nihonken Hozonkai (Nippo). Nippo is an oldest kennel club in Japan created exclusively for Japanese breeds. Its purpose of establishment is to preserve the indigenous breeds of dog inherent to Japan. On the other hand, JKC is an all breed club just like AKC and it is a member of FCI.
The JKC shows are more familiar to you with an element of beauty contest. The competition is within the breed as well as between all breeds. An early history of the Nippo shows are more of an exhibition like a county fair. The exhibitoprs will show the dogs to see how close the dog is to the established standard. There were less of competitive elements but rather more for the purpose of means to establish the Japanese breeds.
Having said the above, I wish to go on with a discussion on the future direction of shiba inu breeding in Japan.
December 02 海外からの訪問者２ (VISITORS FROM ABROAD 2)ロシアからのお客が小野まで尋ねてきてくれました。 ウラジオストックから新潟まで飛行機で１時間半と聞いてロシアとは日本海を挟んで本当に近い隣の国だと改めて感じました。 アメリカとも太平洋を挟んでお隣ですし、最近いろいろな国の人が尋ねてきてくれましたが、クリスマスの音楽が聞こえてくるこの季節、本当に「世界は一つ」と思えてきます。 メリークリスマス！
Today, I had a pleasure of visitor from Russia. The gentleman travels back and forth between Japan and Russia on business and he took time to come visit Ono. He said it is only one and half hours by plane over the Sea of Japan!! Come to think of it, Russia and Japan is a very close next door neighbor. Japan and the US is also a next door neighbor accross the Pacific. I have had many visitors recently from around the world. The Christmas Season is upon us and it is the time to realize that we are all neighbors on earth. Merry Christmas to you!
November 30 外国からの訪問者 (VISITOR FROM ABROAD)全国展見学の後、一週間ほど日本各地を回って犬舎見学と観光をしていたノルウェーとカナダの愛好家達がスペイン在住の杉山さんの案内で小野町まで来てくれました。 杉山さんの友人で秋田犬愛好家の中村さんがご家族と一緒に運転を担当され今回の国際交流に一役買ってくれました。 ラングさんは２０年前に柴犬をノルウェーに紹介されたそうです。 カナダのウェバーさんは四国犬を北アメリカに紹介しています。 この様な方々の努力が海外での日本犬の発展に貢献しています。
Ms. Sugiyama and shiba fanciers from abroad visited my kennel after the Nippo G.N. in Tokyo. It was a short visit but we had an interesting conversation on shibas. Mr. Lang from Norway is a judge and long time shiba fancier who introduced shibas to Norway twenty years ago. Ms. Katja Weber is from Canada and she's been instrumental in introducing Shikokus in N. America. I hope their continued activities will help further the understanding of Japanese breeds abroad.
November 29 第１０５回日本犬全国展覧会 (THE 105th NIPPO GRAND NATIONAL SHOW)１１月２２日・２３日に日本犬保存会主催の全国展覧会が東京夢の島で開催されました。 素晴らしい会場で絶好の展覧会日和に恵まれ、私にとって久しぶりの楽しい全国展でした。 ただ東京での開催にも関わらず出展頭数が９２８頭とちょっと少なめだった事が残念でした。 海外から多数の日本犬愛好家が見学に来ていて日本犬の素晴らしさを堪能されたと思います。 私がお会いしたのはアメリカ・カナダ・ノルウェイー・イタリア・香港の方々で海外での日本犬の人気がうかがえました。 因みに柴犬の最高賞は竹千代号 讃岐水本荘で、我家の駒優号の父犬でした。
The Nippo Grand National Show 2008 was held at Yume no Shima Atheletic Field in Tokyo. The weather was perfect for the show and I enjoyed meeting many shiba inu fanciers from, Hong Kong, Italy, Norway, Canada and US. It was a bit of disappointment that the number of entries was only 928. I remember the entries of over 1,000 at the last show I visited 5 years ago. This may be an indication of recent decline of Nippo members. It is ironical that shiba fanciers oversea are increasing while we are experiencing the decrease here in Japan. The BOB Shiba Inu was Takechiyo Go, Sanuki Mizumotosou. Takechiyo Go is the sire of Komayuu Go in the photo album above. I had Yukari registered this year but unfortunately she was not in her best condition and I did not take her to the show. Perhaps I will try her again next year.

November 21 イタリアからの訪問者 (VISITORS FROM ITALY)以前からメールで交流していたグラッシ博士とコッジ博士が日保の全国展見学の為イタリアから来日しました。 我家の柴犬も見たいとわざわざ小野町まで訪問してくれました。 数時間にわたる柴犬談義でイタリアの柴犬事情も教えていただき楽しい一時を過ごしました。 イタリアではまだまだ柴犬の数も少なく質の向上が課題のようですがグラッシさん達の様な熱心な愛好家がいるので、今後が楽しみです。
Elettra and Massimo, the partners of Tessaiga-Shiba in Italy is now visiting Japan to watch the Nippo Grand National Show starting tomorrow in Tokyo. They were kind enough to take time from a very busy schedule to come all the way to Ono. We had several hours of very interesting discussion on shiba inu. It was a good opportunity for me to learn more about the shiba situation in Italy. It is so wonderful to think that a common interest in shiba inu has resulted in this chance encounter of fanciers from Italy and Japan.
November 16 仔犬 (PUPPIES)柴犬について多くの事を教えて頂いた友人の故土井氏より譲り受けた華の舞号から待望の黒柴の仔犬が生まれました。 桜王との配合で多いに期待しています。 黒の仔犬は我家の中心雌犬になると思います。 この仔の成長をブログで報告していければ良いのですが・・・
Mr. Doi sent me Hana no Mai before he passed away of cancer. Hana no Mai was his favorite bitch and I have been looking forward to breed a nice girl to go on with the line. Mr. Doi won the Nippo Grand National Show twice with Chisato Go and Shino Go in partnership with Mr. Sano. Hana no Mai is closely related to Shino Go. I bred the pups below sired by Sakura-ou and I think I now have what I been waiting for. I hope to keep you up dated on the development of the pups.
