December 02 海外からの訪問者２ (VISITORS FROM ABROAD 2)ロシアからのお客が小野まで尋ねてきてくれました。 ウラジオストックから新潟まで飛行機で１時間半と聞いてロシアとは日本海を挟んで本当に近い隣の国だと改めて感じました。 アメリカとも太平洋を挟んでお隣ですし、最近いろいろな国の人が尋ねてきてくれましたが、クリスマスの音楽が聞こえてくるこの季節、本当に「世界は一つ」と思えてきます。 メリークリスマス！
Today, I had a pleasure of visitor from Russia. The gentleman travels back and forth between Japan and Russia on business and he took time to come visit Ono. He said it is only one and half hours by plane over the Sea of Japan!! Come to think of it, Russia and Japan is a very close next door neighbor. Japan and the US is also a next door neighbor accross the Pacific. I have had many visitors recently from around the world. The Christmas Season is upon us and it is the time to realize that we are all neighbors on earth. Merry Christmas to you!
November 30 外国からの訪問者 (VISITOR FROM ABROAD)全国展見学の後、一週間ほど日本各地を回って犬舎見学と観光をしていたノルウェーとカナダの愛好家達がスペイン在住の杉山さんの案内で小野町まで来てくれました。 杉山さんの友人で秋田犬愛好家の中村さんがご家族と一緒に運転を担当され今回の国際交流に一役買ってくれました。 ラングさんは２０年前に柴犬をノルウェーに紹介されたそうです。 カナダのウェバーさんは四国犬を北アメリカに紹介しています。 この様な方々の努力が海外での日本犬の発展に貢献しています。
Ms. Sugiyama and shiba fanciers from abroad visited my kennel after the Nippo G.N. in Tokyo. It was a short visit but we had an interesting conversation on shibas. Mr. Lang from Norway is a judge and long time shiba fancier who introduced shibas to Norway twenty years ago. Ms. Katja Weber is from Canada and she's been instrumental in introducing Shikokus in N. America. I hope their continued activities will help further the understanding of Japanese breeds abroad.
November 29 第１０５回日本犬全国展覧会 (THE 105th NIPPO GRAND NATIONAL SHOW)１１月２２日・２３日に日本犬保存会主催の全国展覧会が東京夢の島で開催されました。 素晴らしい会場で絶好の展覧会日和に恵まれ、私にとって久しぶりの楽しい全国展でした。 ただ東京での開催にも関わらず出展頭数が９２８頭とちょっと少なめだった事が残念でした。 海外から多数の日本犬愛好家が見学に来ていて日本犬の素晴らしさを堪能されたと思います。 私がお会いしたのはアメリカ・カナダ・ノルウェイー・イタリア・香港の方々で海外での日本犬の人気がうかがえました。 因みに柴犬の最高賞は竹千代号 讃岐水本荘で、我家の駒優号の父犬でした。
The Nippo Grand National Show 2008 was held at Yume no Shima Atheletic Field in Tokyo. The weather was perfect for the show and I enjoyed meeting many shiba inu fanciers from, Hong Kong, Italy, Norway, Canada and US. It was a bit of disappointment that the number of entries was only 928. I remember the entries of over 1,000 at the last show I visited 5 years ago. This may be an indication of recent decline of Nippo members. It is ironical that shiba fanciers oversea are increasing while we are experiencing the decrease here in Japan. The BOB Shiba Inu was Takechiyo Go, Sanuki Mizumotosou. Takechiyo Go is the sire of Komayuu Go in the photo album above. I had Yukari registered this year but unfortunately she was not in her best condition and I did not take her to the show. Perhaps I will try her again next year.

November 21 イタリアからの訪問者 (VISITORS FROM ITALY)以前からメールで交流していたグラッシ博士とコッジ博士が日保の全国展見学の為イタリアから来日しました。 我家の柴犬も見たいとわざわざ小野町まで訪問してくれました。 数時間にわたる柴犬談義でイタリアの柴犬事情も教えていただき楽しい一時を過ごしました。 イタリアではまだまだ柴犬の数も少なく質の向上が課題のようですがグラッシさん達の様な熱心な愛好家がいるので、今後が楽しみです。
Elettra and Massimo, the partners of Tessaiga-Shiba in Italy is now visiting Japan to watch the Nippo Grand National Show starting tomorrow in Tokyo. They were kind enough to take time from a very busy schedule to come all the way to Ono. We had several hours of very interesting discussion on shiba inu. It was a good opportunity for me to learn more about the shiba situation in Italy. It is so wonderful to think that a common interest in shiba inu has resulted in this chance encounter of fanciers from Italy and Japan.
November 16 仔犬 (PUPPIES)柴犬について多くの事を教えて頂いた友人の故土井氏より譲り受けた華の舞号から待望の黒柴の仔犬が生まれました。 桜王との配合で多いに期待しています。 黒の仔犬は我家の中心雌犬になると思います。 この仔の成長をブログで報告していければ良いのですが・・・
Mr. Doi sent me Hana no Mai before he passed away of cancer. Hana no Mai was his favorite bitch and I have been looking forward to breed a nice girl to go on with the line. Mr. Doi won the Nippo Grand National Show twice with Chisato Go and Shino Go in partnership with Mr. Sano. Hana no Mai is closely related to Shino Go. I bred the pups below sired by Sakura-ou and I think I now have what I been waiting for. I hope to keep you up dated on the development of the pups.
October 21 紅葉狩り (AUTUMN FOLIAGE)福島には紅葉の美しい観光スポットが沢山あります。 休日の渋滞を避けて家内と会津地方の紅葉狩りに出かけました。 一泊の短い休日でしたが、二股温泉の秘湯に浸かり福島の秋を楽しみました。
"Momijigari"is a word in Japanese meaning "serching for autumn foliage". Shizuno and I set out for momijigari the other day and found several beautiful spots in full autumn foliage. Momiji is scarlet leaves or maple leaves. We stayed over night at a small hot spring spa resort in a valley. There was an out door bath under the sky just next to a river, where one can soak in a hot spring and listen to the running waters of the rapid.
October 16 トラッキング (TRACKING)スウェーデンの友人は以前から柴犬では珍しいトラッキングの訓練をしています。 我家から輸出された黒柴でのトラッキング訓練の写真を送ってきました。 トラッキングとはどう言うものか写真を見てください。 仕事をしている犬の目は活き活きとしています。 展覧会でもただキレイな犬でなく目の輝いている犬を選んで欲しいと思います。
Birgit has been using shibas in tracking. She sent me these pictures of Kuronishiki in training. I was told by my hunter friend that shibas are good at picking prays by sight and sound but I am very happy to see that shibas are also good at tracking. Dogs at work are happy and have sparkling eyes. I think judges in conformation show should have a second look at the strength of eyes as shiba is a hunting breed.

October 14 星乃黒花号 （KUROHANA GO）アメリカに輸出された琥竜号の最初の仔でゆかりの同腹の妹が我家の仲間入りをしました。 琥竜の仔らしい犬でとても気に入っております。 我家の今後の交配計画に欠かせない犬になると思われます。 今年の全国展はゆかりではなくこの犬で勝負する事になりそうです。
A daughter of Koryu and a littermate of Yukari has joined our kennel. Her name is Hoshi no Kurohana. She took many good characteristics from her sire Koryu and I am hoping that she will be a core of my breeding plan in the future. In fact, I like her so much that I may show her at the Nippo Grand National Show this year instead of Yukari. Wish me luck!!
September 29 風越の豊海号 (KAZAKOSHI NO TOYOMI GO)オーストラリアは犬の検疫が厳しく、以前から良い柴犬を送りたいと思いながらなかなか輸出できないでいた国です。 たまたま日本に滞在していた方に自分で輸出の手続きをする事を条件に仔犬をお譲りしました。 その仔犬が思った様に成長しなかったので代替犬を今年輸出しました。 オーストラリアへの輸出は初めての経験でしたが輸入者の協力もあり、比較的スムーズに手続きが出来ました。 最近オーストラリアから「豊」の写真が送られてきてかなり良い犬に成長しているので、今後オーストラリアの柴犬の発展に多いに貢献して欲しいと思っています。
I have been wanting to send some good shibas to Australia for some time. When an Australian lady living in Japan wanted to take home a shiba pup, it was an opportunity come true. She did all the quarantine procedures herself. Unfortunately, the pup she took did not work out well and I had to replace the pup and do the difficult export procedure myself. With the extensive help from Paul, I sent a promissing young boy, Kazakoshi no Toyomi earlier this year. Toyo is a half sister of Fuuka and I hope he does well as a stud and improve the breed there.
September 20 若 (WAKA)異血として導入した豊錦系の仔犬がこの秋展覧会に出陳されるほど立派に成長しました。 この犬は友人の所で訓練され全国展にも出される予定です。 難点はありますが多いに期待しています。
Waka, the pup I introduced to my kennel last year has grown well at Mr. Hoshi's kennel. Mr. Hoshi did a good job of training him for the show this fall. This boy is from the Toyonishiki line, a new bloodline for my kennel. We have a high expectation for the boy.
September 15 JKC品評会 (JKC SHOW)週末友人に誘われて福島市でのジャパンケネルクラブの品評会を見に行きました。 グレイトデーンからチワワまで様々な犬種を見ることが出来て日保の展覧会とは全く違った明るい雰囲気の中で愛好家達が「犬」を楽しんでいるなぁと感じました。 こういう「犬」の楽しみ方もまた良い物だと思いました。 ただ柴犬は１頭だけしか出ておらず少し寂しい感がありました。 日本を代表するジャパンケネルクラブなのでもっと日本犬が出陳されても良いのではと思わずにはいられませんでした。
I went to see a Japan Kennel Club Show in Fukushima City over the weekend. It was very interesting to see so many different breeds from Great Dane to Chihuahua in one show, very much different atmosphere from a Nippo show. This was my first experience at a JKC show and I was surprised to see so many ladies and families just enjoying "dogs". I was very disappointed though that there was a very small entry of Japanese breeds. I saw only one shiba entered in the show!? I hope JKC would do more to encourage Japanese breeds.
September 10 交通事故？！ (CAR ACCIDENT?!)アメリカの友人たちから何通か交通事故の噂があるが？とのメールが届いて驚いています。 噂はこのインターネットの時代にはアッと言う間に広がるので恐ろしいものです。 ただこんなに多くの人達が心配してくれた事に違う意味での驚きもあります。 私は全く元気で全国展に向けて琥竜の仔犬たちを鋭意訓練中です。 噂とは言えご心配かけて申し訳ありません。
I received several mails from the US, inquiring my health after the CAR ACCIDENT?! In this day and age of internet, it seems a rumour travels very fast. I wonder where the rumour started but thank you very much for your inquiries and appreciate your concerns. I am well, trying to spend each day in good health and hapiness. I hope to show Koryu daughters in the Nippo G.N. show and spending a good amount of time with them. See you at the show!
September 03 日保全国展 (THE NIPPO GRAND NATIONAL SHOW)平成２０年度第１０５回日本犬保存会全国展覧会は１１月２２日・２３日, 東京都江東区にある夢の島東地区競技場にて行われる予定になっている。 以前は伊勢や大阪の全国展覧会に家内と一緒に旅行がてらよく行ったものだが、このところ久しく行っていない。 東京で開催されると言う事もあって今年は是非出陳してみようと思っている。 幸い琥竜の直仔が何頭か期待できるので現在鋭意訓練中である。 乞うご期待と言いたいところであるがさてさてどうなる事やら。
The 105th Nihonken Hozonkai Gand National Show will be held this year in Tokyo on November 22nd and 23rd. The site is in the Yumenoshima area、it is about 15 minutes on foot from the Shinkiba Rail Station. There are JR, Keiyo line trains and Metro, Yurakucho line trains from the Tokyo Station.
I used to go to all the G.N. shows with my wife Shizuno and enjoyed visiting near by tourist spots but it has been a long time since I last visited the show. We expect a good number of entries this year since it is in Tokyo. I am preparing Koryu offspring for the show this year. I hope to meet many foreign visitors there. If anyone is planning to come please let me know.
August 20 野武士の様な犬 (MASCULINE MALE)日本犬はよく野武士の様でなければならないと言われます。 日本犬に求められているのは今時流行のジャニーズ系の男の子やヨン様のようなにやけた男には無い野性的な風貌なのです。 品評会ではただキレイなだけのイケメンがもてはやされますが、野性味のある野武士のような柴犬は何処に行ってしまったのでしょうか？ 日本犬保存会の展覧会が美人コンテストになってしまい、いつの間にか日本犬の本質が失われつつあると感じているのは私だけでしょうか？
The Nippo standard states that male must be masculine and female, feminine. We say here in Japan that a dog has to be masculine like a wild SAMURAI. If you are familiar with Kurosawa films, just imagine the wild looking samurais in "Seven Samurai"or the wild worrier acted by Toshiro Mifune in "RASHOMON". I am sure that shibas looking like these wild samurais will not be appreciated by the judges in the comformation shows. I am afraid that masculinity required in shibas are being lost in the "beauty contests". I sincerely hope the judges abroad would try to understand the intrinsic qualities of Japanese breeds and appreciate the wild samurai masculinity in male shibas. My Sakura-ou may not be beautiful but I think he has that wild samurai like quality. He is a masculine looking stud.
August 13 素朴感のある柴犬 (SHIBA INU WITH SOBOKU QUALITY)素朴感を言葉で表すのはかなり難しく、外国の愛好家に理解してもらう事に苦労している。 私が最も柴犬らしいと感じているのが寺尾花号と言う全国展で大臣賞を受賞した雌犬です。 この犬は派手さが無く落ち着いた素朴感あふれる犬だと思うのだが如何であろうか。 私の友人が最近作出した雌の若犬も質素な毛色の素朴感のある犬だと思う。 この写真から私の感じている柴犬の素朴感を感じててもらえれば幸いである。
I mentioned in one of my articles that Teraobana Go, the Grand National winner, is one of the best shibas I have seen. I feel that she has Soboku Quality that we have been speaking about. She is not very showy but has a natural seasoned maturity. Her refined simplicity is what attracts me the most. The picture of a young bitch next to Teraobana Go is bred by my firend Mr. Nagase living in Ono. This girl is still very young but I think this girl has a potential to develop well with soboku quality. I hope the shiba fanciers overseas can see the differences between these shibas and shibas winning in the shows in the US and Europe.
August 07 柴犬の素朴感について (ON SOBOKU QUALITY OF SHIBA INU)オランダの友人から柴犬の素朴感についてオランダ語で紹介したいとの依頼があり、メールのやり取りをしました。 私が以前アメリカの雑誌に書いた記事などを参考にしながらどうにか納得のいく説明が出来たようです。 この方が素朴感をどのように理解したのか実のところは良く分からないのですが、日本人の説明より身近な言葉で彼の考える素朴感を紹介できたのではないでしょうか。 お互い母国語以外でのやり取りでしたが、最終的に英語で下記の説明になっています。
Geert Jan from the Netherlands and I had a several exchange of e-mails on SOBOKU. I have been tying to explain the concept in English on many many occasions but frankly, I was not sure if my message has gotten through correctly. Geert Jan has written his understanding of soboku quality in Dutch and had it translated to English as follows. I am very happy to see a Western perspective on this very Japanese concept. I hope Geert Jan's version of this important aspect of shiba inu will adds to better understanding of the breed.

August 01 テキサスへ （GOING TO TEXAS)テキサスの愛好家が小野まで仔犬を引き取りに来ました。 琴桜は桜王と葵琴姫の仔ですが品評会だけでなくアジリティーやユティリティーに使いたいとの事でしたので今後の成長を期待しています。 柴犬は猟に使われていたのでトラッキングなどの作業犬としてその可能性を延ばして欲しいと思っています。 スウェーデンの愛好家も品評会だけでは物足りないと考えているので今後海外で柴犬は日本では無い違った発展が見れるかもしれません。
Susan and Ellen from Houston, Texas came to pick up Kotosakura. Koto is out of Sakura-ou/Aoikotohime breeding. Susan is interested in using shibas for utility shows. I agree with Susan that shibas should be used not only in conformation shows but be used in tracking, agility and such utility activities. Shibas as a hunting breed is not just a pretty looking show dog. Birgit in Sweden is doing well with her shibas in tracking. I think such activities abroad open up a new possibilities for shibas and perhaps shibas abroad will step in to a new horizon. I wish Susan all the success with Koto.
July 27 香港からの来訪者 (VISITOR FROM HONG KONG)香港では最近柴犬の愛好者が増えているようで喜ばしい限りです。 日本語がとても達者な蔡さんや若いカップルのＳｕｓａｎａ・Ｃｈａｒｌｅｓ Ｙｕさんからメールをいただいております。 愛好家達のクラブもあるようで正しい柴犬の理解が進むことを期待します。 Ｙｕさんご夫妻が日本訪問の機会を利用してわざわざ小野町まで来てくれました。 短い時間でしたがとても楽しいひと時を過ごせました。 柴犬から始まる交流の輪が広がればと思っています。
It seems shiba inu fanciers are increasing in Hong Kong. I am receiving e-mails from Mr Cai whose Japanese is perfect and Susana and Charles who came to Ono recently for a short visit. I understand that there is even a private club for shiba inu. I am very happy to see that shibas are loved by so many people. I hope that shibas will be understood correctly and the breed improves in Hong Kong.

July 16 ワールドドッグショー (WORLD DOG SHOW in SWEDEN)スウェーデンの友人からワールド・ドッグ・ショーでの柴犬BOBとBOSの写真が送られて来ました。 まだまだヨーロッパの柴犬のレベルは低い様ですが、毎年良くなっていると思います。 しかし私が作出したテツ号の直子がBOSにとどまったから言うのではなく、派手な見栄えのする犬がBOBになった事に少なからず失望しています。 日本犬の素朴感について海外の愛好家にまだまだ啓蒙する必要を感じています。
Gittan sent me this picture of BOB and BOS shibas at the World Dog Show in Sweden. I think the level of shibas in Europe is improving a lot in the recent years. It is not fair to make any definitive critique of these shibas by just looking at the picture. However, by looking at the BOB dog, it seems the trend of shibas is for a showy, pretty type rather than sober beauty of Soboku Quality I talked about in many occasions. BTW, BOS bitch, Inagiru on the rigyht side of the picture, is sired by Tetsu, a stud I sent to Gittan ten years ago.
July 08 審査めぐりトラブル (VIOLENCE AT AKITA SHOW)数日前の朝日新聞によると、文化庁は秋田犬保存会の展覧会で犬に順位をつける審査をしない様に申し入れているとの事である。 「成績によって取引価格が変わるといい、審査結果をめぐるいざこざが繰り返し問題になっているため。」との事である。 天然記念物としての秋田犬の保存を目的とする秋保が、このような行政指導を受けるとはなんとも情けない。 日本犬保存会も日本犬の保存を目的としており、私は順位をつける展覧会の審査にどのような意味があるのか以前から疑問を持っていた。 審査の結果にも納得のいくことは少ない。 個人的にはジャパンケンネルクラブの主催する「品評会」と日保の｢展覧会」にはおのずから違いがあってしかるべきと考えるのだが・・・ いかが？
A few days ago, a news paper reported that the Ministry of Culture has requested Akiho (Akitainu Hozonnkai) to stop sponsoring shows which give out placements such as BOB, BOS etc. This administrative guidance was issued as a result of repeated incidences of violence, bribery etc. over the judging at Akita shows. The purpose of Akiho is to preserve Akitainu as a cultural breed. I question the relevance of giving out placements if the objective of the show is to preserve the breed. A similar question should be asked with Nippo. Obviously, Nippo and JKC have different objectives and the purpose of shows must be different with each organizatrion. A beauty contest is one thing and preservation of indigenous animal is another.
June 30 アクロバチック シバ (ACROBATIC SHIBA)スウェーデンの友人が写した写真です。 逆立ちしたりバクテンしたり・・・一瞬をよく捉えたと感心しています。 海外の愛好家達は犬とのいろいろな楽しみ方をしている様で我々も参考にすべき事が多いと思っています。 スウェーデンではアジリティーやオベディエンスに柴犬を使っているそうです。
Gittan from Sweden captured this acrobatic moment. Hiro is not only a wonderful show dog but also a talented gymnast. LOL Gittan feels that shibas could be used not only in conformation but also in obedience and agility. I am very happy to see this as here in Japan we do not use shibas in obedience nor agility. My pet peeve saying is "shibas are not just pretty show dogs."
June 15 ロシアからの写真 (PICTURES FROM RUSSIA)ロシアでも我家から行った柴犬が品評会で活躍しています。 ロシアではお金持ち相手のペット産業が繁盛しているそうで、つい最近、金や宝石を使った犬用のアクセサリーの販売のニュースをテレビで見たばかりです。 これから柴犬も評判になるだろうと思います。
Elena from Russia sent me these pictures of shibas. I sent Riki to her and Agush is a daughter of Nippo in Finland. Nippo is also my breeding. I am happy to see that the shibas are getting popular in Russia.
June 14 ブルーベリーの花 （BLUEBERRY FLOWERS)しばらくブログに記事の追加が出来なかったのでご無沙汰でした。
いよいよ梅雨に入り夏が近くなるにつれて我家のブルーベリー園の花も満開になって来ました。 今年の冬は厳しかったので花芽がかなり凍害にあいましたが、春の訪れとともに元気を取り戻し可愛らしい花を咲かせています。 早生のブルーベリーはすでに実をつけていて、これから少しずつ熟していくと思います。 ７月の摘み取り園開園を心待ちにしています。
I had a problem with renewing my blog and could not write-in for a while. The problem is hopefully solved and I should be able to continue with the blog.
Our blueberry flowers are now in full bloom. As the days get warmer green fruits will ripen into dark blue. Our U-pick blueberry farm is taking a lot of my time away from shibas. I have two litters sired by Koryu but they are getting only half the time they need. My priority will be for the blueberries until the end of summer.
May 30 黒柴 (BLACK AND TAN SHIBAS)黒柴が海外の品評会であまり活躍していないとの情報に納得がいかないでいます。 黒柴は小型のハスキーやマラミュートに似ているので海外でもこの色が好きな人は沢山いると思います。 海外の審査員が黒柴に偏見を持っているのか今まで海外に送られた黒柴の質が悪かったのか・・・ 柴犬の２割ほどは黒柴なのでそれなりの評価を得られるよう海外の愛好家・審査員の啓蒙に勤めたいと思っています。
Some friends inform me that black and tan shibas are not appreciated much by the judges in the shows abroad. I am perplexed as to why, as 20% of all shibas are black and tans. Perhaps the quality of black and tan shibas exported abroad were not of good quality. I have been a red shiba inu breeder for a long time but since Yuume, I started to love the color. Shiba black coat has to be tri-color of balck, white and tan. Shiba black hairs should not be shiny like in most black Western breeds but should be rusty black having dull and mat shade. This coat color is more difficult than red but I hope the shiba fanciers and judges abroad would understand the correct black and tan coat color and appreciate the beauty of this minority color. The picture below is a good example of correct black and tan coat color.

May 23 スエーデンからの写真 (PICTURES FROM SWEDEN)先日スェーデンに輸出した琥竜の直子黒錦の写真が送られて来ました。 元気に育って皆から愛されているようでその様子が写真に現れていると思いました。 ヨーロッパではまだ黒柴の理解が充分でない様なのでこの犬が審査員の黒柴に対する偏見を変えてくれる事を願っています。
Kuronishiki a Koryu son out of my Tsubaki was sent to Sweden and Gittan took these pictures recently. I am happy to see that Kuronishiki is developing well and loved by many. The prejudice against black and tan shibas abroad is something I do not understand. I hope this boy will change that views with many judges in Europe.
